A couple of months ago, I told Kyle that I didn’t want any gifts for our anniversary. “I just want this: our hike. Planned, prepped and executed. Figure out the kids and the timing and just make it happen.” We’ve wanted to do a solo hiking trip for forever. We practically lived off-grid camping when we were young and foolhardy and didn’t have kids. And then we kept doing it even when we had kids, but then we were no longer doing it alone. Which has been great, but sometimes I miss the us-ness of our solo trips. So that was all I wanted: just us, alone, away from everything, under the sky. And that’s what we’re doing this weekend, just us, out in the backcountry of our favorite place in the world. Us, the rocks, and the stars. And it will be perfect.
