Waltzing Into Tomorrowland

November 14, 2011

I love Disney. I’ve been pretty outspoken about this. I love the parks, I love the movies, I love their pirates, I love – yes – their princesses (especially Emilia’s interpretations of them, because, really, wouldn’t Snow White been more awesome – and had a better run through the dark woods – if she’d worn skate shoes?) I love that whole wishing on a star thing. I love the animated short, Destino, that Walt Disney created with Salvador Dali. I love Maleficent, and all the glorious female villians of the Disney canon. I also love Pixar, and Marvel Comics, and the Muppets, and Modern Family, and Lost – none of which come immediately to mind when you think ‘Disney’, but all of which are part of the Disney storytelling matrix.

Why am I telling you this? Because Disney just became a very, very big part of my future. Of our future. You’ll have to click over to Bad Mother Confidential to find out more, because that’s where the news is, and it wouldn’t have been cool to scoop myself or the Wall Street Journal, so.

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

September 13, 2011

I breastfed both of my children. I breastfed Emilia on park benches and in restaurants and in libraries and on airplanes. I breastfed Jasper in front of a crowd at BlogHer ’08 – while I was speaking – when he was eight weeks old. I breastfed Jasper by Guy Kawasaki’s swimming pool, while sobbing and [...]

Sh*t My Kid Says

September 12, 2011

My daughter is something of a storyteller. It’s not that she lies; on the contrary, she is almost unbearably devoted to the truth, such that every single utterance made by anybody within earshot of her is deconstructed by her for the purposes of establishing the exact parameters of its bases in fact. But she does [...]

Oh, The Places You’ll Go (A Cautionary Tale)

August 31, 2011

Last week, I flew across Canada to visit my mom, who’s been sick. I brought Emilia with me, because I figured – morbid creature that I am – that if anything happened to my mom, I wanted her last memories to be of her hellion granddaughter demanding more cake. I’m joking, of course. I wanted [...]

Raindrops On Roses, Whiskers On Kittens, And Also THIS

August 22, 2011

You guys. Have you seen this awesome thing? I MADE THIS. Okay, well, not totally me. I just, like, directed it. Other people did the actual making, mostly. I’m not good with my hands. Anyway. So a bunch of really awesomely talented people built this wonderful thing and made it pretty and a bunch of [...]

From The Bad Pitch Files: Blogging For Condoms

August 11, 2011

I get a lot of PR pitches. Like, many dozens in a single day, sometimes more. Mostly I just delete them. Some of them, though, I’m kind of tempted to print out and frame. Or scribble on. Or both. Because they are just that ridiculously and outstandingly awesome. What follows is one such pitch. I [...]

Mamas, Do Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Mommy Bloggers

July 18, 2011

What follows is part of a post from a few months ago. Read to the bottom and you’ll see why I’ve reposted it. IT WAS THE BIRTH OF SOMETHING. SORT OF. Here’s something that you might not know about me: I’m a professional blogger. A professional mom-blogger. Which is to say, I earn a living [...]
