Going Far Ahead Of The Road

December 30, 2010

My eyes already touch the sunny hill.
going far ahead of the road I have begun.
So we are grasped by what we cannot grasp;
it has inner light, even from a distance-

and changes us, even if we do not reach it,
into something else, which, hardly sensing it,
we already are; a gesture waves us on
answering our own wave…
but what we feel is the wind in our faces.

– Rainier Maria Rilke, A Walk.

A wish for the new year, for myself, and my loved ones, and everyone: to answer our own waves, all of us. And to grasp, or seek to grasp, that which we cannot grasp, and to let ourselves be changed. And through all of it, always, to feel the wind on our faces, to let it blow our hair and kiss our cheeks and to love it, to welcome it, even when it stings.

Of Frankicense And Myrrh And Coffee And Sprinkle Donuts

December 28, 2010

In our little town, there is a charming little main street filled with antique stores and specialty shops and charming little cafes – two of them – at which you can buy lattes and cappuccinos and pots of tea with cookies on the side and sit at little round tables and have quiet, gentle conversations [...]

Sing It Loud

December 24, 2010

Merry Christmas, you guys. Here’s some joy for you: (This was two years ago, which, it should be noted, was one year before Glee debuted. Emilia, obviously, was ahead of the curve.) (This year she did ‘Oh Holy Night’ with synthesizers, but unfortunately, I didn’t get it on video. You’ll just have to use your [...]

Stopping By Toboggan Hill On A Snowy Evening

December 22, 2010

The snow is lovely, bright and deep / but she has promises to keep / and miles to go before she sleeps / and miles to go before she sleeps. Frost’s classic poem is, of course, haunting in its original form, but is it any more haunting than a cold winter afternoon spent trying to [...]

Bring Us Goodness And Light

December 20, 2010

I love Christmas. I love it with the fiery heat of a blazing winter fire and a million twinkling fairy lights. I love the sparkle and the twinkle and the plum pudding and the eggnog and the tinsel and the gift wrap and the stockings and the carols and the hymns and the stories, all [...]

Dress Your Soul In Sparkles And Tutus

December 17, 2010

If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if your very essence were distilled and bottled in a crystal decanter and then sniffed enthusiastically by a Celestial Soul Portrait artist who, becoming high on the fumes of your celestial essence, proceeded to Photoshop the shit out of a picture of you, well, wonder no [...]

I Am A Mother

December 15, 2010

It was sometime early on in one of the first sessions of TEDWomen last week that the question occurred to me: are we saying to each other here – in this go go women go celebration of everything that women can do – that women are the new men? And if that’s the case, is [...]

I Can Has Bucket

December 14, 2010

I don’t think I’ve ever had the stomach flu, like, ever. Maybe I had it once or twice as a kid – I have vague memories of sipping ginger ale and nibbling saltines while clutching a bucket and watching Family Feud – but never as an adult. The only times in my adulthood that I’ve [...]

If A Christmas Tree Falls On Your Kid, And You Don’t Film It, Did It Happen?

December 13, 2010

I’m not a professional photographer. Nor am I professional filmmaker or documentarian. But I do tell stories, and a lot of those stories are about my kids, and telling stories about my kids involves using photographs and video. So I am, if you will, a Semi-Amateur Multimedia Documentary Artist and Chronicler Of Family Narratives, and [...]
